27. The Troubled Man
Wallander's daughter Linda has returned to Ystad and is working with her father again. She is now married to the likeable Hans von Enke and is the mother of a young daughter, Klara. A visit from her in-laws, the former submarine commander Hakan von Enke and his wife Louise, is the occasion for a dinner with Wallander. The intimate family celebration ends abruptly when the retired admiral is called back to Stockholm. Wallander later learns from the television news that von Enke's past has caught up with him: In the 1980s, the officer commanded a military operation against an unidentified submarine that had entered Swedish territorial waters. A young naval diver lost his life, whose body was unexpectedly recovered 30 years later.
The father of the navy diver, a fisherman named Erik Lundberg, accuses von Enke of having sent his son to his death. Now von Enke has disappeared without a trace. Linda tasks her father with the search, because the detective has time anyway: after he left his service weapon in a pub - apparently in a drunken state - he was suspended from duty for three weeks. When Louise von Enke dies in an arranged car accident and papers are found in her possession that point to secret service activities, Wallander suddenly finds himself in the middle of a spy case.
