19. The Priest
Henrik Nordström, pastor of a Protestant free church, is gunned down after a secret rendezvous. The seriously injured victim lies in a coma, unable to be questioned. When the doctors at the hospital determine that he is brain dead, Nordström's wife Åsa, a member of a radical sect, is in a great hurry to have the medical equipment switched off in order to send her husband "home to God". Inspector Wallander finds out that Åsa knew about her husband's infidelities. Was the crime committed out of jealousy? Nordström's connections to Peter Unell, the managing director of a shady aid organization, whose wife Lotta was the pastor's secret lover, point in another direction.
When forensic technician Nyberg finds the murder weapon under the back seat of Unell's car, prosecutor Katarina Ahlsell opens the case against the car's owner: murder out of jealousy. For Wallander, who himself is plagued by feelings of jealousy because Katarina is suddenly showing great interest in his young colleague Pontus, it all fits together almost too well. Although he is anything but sympathetic to Unell, who is doing profitable business selling disused medical equipment to the Third World, he also suspects that he has become the victim of a diabolical intrigue.
