11. Bloodties
Inspector Wallander is sweating it out for a stress ECG when he is called out on an assignment. Traces of blood at the crime scene, a small yacht, point to a brutal murder. But there is no trace of Louise Dyrander, the yacht owner's daughter. Checking her telephone line leads Wallander to Micke Pettersson, a married man who lives with his wife and friends in an idyllic farmhouse flat-sharing community. Under interrogation, Pettersson explains that he ended his affair with Louise Dyrander that day in an argument and spent the rest of the evening with his flatmate Oskar Ung. When Linda checks the alibi, she meets her ex again in Oskar, to whom she still feels attracted. The next day, Louise's body washes up in the lifeboat of her yacht. Traces of blood lead to Pettersson, who now confesses that he returned to Louise that same evening.
But he had already found her dead and wanted to make the body disappear to avert suspicion. Wallander doesn't believe him until Anki Hedman, a member of Pettersson's flat share, is also shot dead. It is now clear that Pettersson cannot be the murderer. He numbers his victims, and when little Benjamin is marked as number 3 shortly afterwards, Wallander feels it is necessary to take a closer look at the members of this strange flat-sharing community. The flatmates only pay a surprisingly low rent to a strange foundation and lead a comparatively comfortable life without any recognizable gainful employment. During his investigations, Wallander comes across an unsolved robbery of an armored car. The loot of 17.5 million crowns has since disappeared, and only one of the five perpetrators was caught. He has recently escaped from prison.
