When Inspector Wallander finds the severed finger of a black man in a burnt-down farmhouse and the body of a blameless woman turns up shortly afterwards, he has no idea that he is on the trail of a large-scale political conspiracy: South African right-wing extremists are preparing a spectacular assassination attempt in Sweden. But who or what is their target? Wallander picks up the terrorists' trail, which leads him all the way to South Africa.
