32. Sorgfågeln

The imminent closure of the police station depresses the mood of his colleagues in Ystad. Wallander has been on edge lately anyway, but this is due to his progressive Alzheimer's disease, which only his daughter Linda knows about so far. Despite the doctor's urgent warning that he should finally cut back, the detective throws himself into his work with enthusiasm. Paolo Salino has been kidnapped, but strangely there is no ransom demand. The shady owner of a posh restaurant is a suspected drug dealer who has been under investigation for some time by the capable young colleague Jenny Blom from Malmö.

Since every one of her informants has been unmasked, she suspects that Salino is being covered up by a corrupt colleague at the top. When it turns out that Jenny herself kidnapped him in order to find out the name of this traitor, Wallander is able to persuade her to release Salino. Meanwhile, head of department Mattson learns of Wallander's illness and forces him to resign. While clearing out his desk, Wallander meets Salino's young daughter Iris. She tells him that a great friend of Salino's is in the immediate vicinity.
