04. The Darkness
An abandoned child is discovered in a car on a country road near Ystad. There is no trace of the child's driver and father, boat builder Carl Svendsen, and the mother has been in a psychiatric hospital since the suicide of her 14-year-old sister. Inspector Wallander, who is anxiously awaiting the results of a cancer examination, initially concentrates his investigation on the circle of relatives and friends of the missing man. Carl Svendsen had apparently been suffering from severe depression since his daughter Anja had hanged herself six months earlier. Wallander discovers connections to the Sahlin couple: Carl Svendsen had a relationship with the woman, and he used to do business with the man.
While Wallander doesn't want to rule out murder out of jealousy, Linda, who is very involved in school projects against drug abuse, intuitively senses a connection between Carl Svendsen's disappearance and the suicide of his daughter Anja. In the dead girl's nursery, which the grieving father has not touched since, Linda discovers the girl's laptop. Meanwhile, Tove, the Sahlin couple's daughter, has collapsed during class following an overdose of Rohypnol. When the investigators discover shocking photos on Anja's computer, they suddenly realize that they are on the trail of a ruthless gang of blackmailers and drug dealers who are looking for their defenceless victims in the school playground. But how can all this be happening in front of the teachers?
