05. The African

The election campaign is underway in Ystad. The Social Democratic Party is preparing an appearance by politician Kenneth Nilsson under the strictest security precautions. As if that wasn't enough stress for the local police, a body is found on a freight train from Ystad to Poland: a young black African, apparently murdered. The crime and the suspected motive remain just as mysterious to Inspector Wallander as the question of why the man was in the Swedish province. When the slick Farzan Keyhan is unexpectedly sent to Ystad by the top police authority to oversee the investigation, Wallander suspects that there are obviously influential people with an interest in closing the case as quickly and, above all, as inconspicuously as possible. In fact, it is only by a stroke of luck that the detective is able to prevent Farzan from having the mentally disturbed Arvid charged as the confessed perpetrator and the case closed.

At the same time, however, the big-city yuppie puts the investigators on the trail of the African Diao, a friend of the dead man, who has been missing since the night of the murder. A feverish search begins, in the course of which it emerges that Diao was having an affair with the married Mia - Farzan promptly has Mia's husband Lasse arrested as the prime suspect because of his right-wing extremist past. This closes the case for him. But Wallander doesn't believe that the father of the family is guilty, especially when Linda makes a discovery on the Internet that gives the case a whole new twist. Astonished, the investigators follow the traces of a bloody deed committed a long time ago in Africa.
