24. The Heritage
Manfred Stjärne, co-owner of a large apple orchard and cider press, is brutally stabbed to death. Shortly afterwards, Jan Kowalski from Poland is found in the stable of his estate, apparently having hanged himself. Wallander does not hide the fact for long that Kowalski's wife Anna, who is employed as a seasonal worker on the plantation, was having an affair with her murdered employer Stjärne. Did Kowalski take revenge on his rival and then commit suicide? Wallander's colleague Katarina Ahlsell doesn't believe this theory. She finds it strange that Wallander is not investigating Stjärne's widow Claire, who is not mourning her husband at all. Katarina believes that the detective is biased in this case: Wallander has arranged to go to a restaurant with this Claire. While the prosecutor investigates Claire on her own, the case takes a strange turn.
Psychologist Benjamin Wilkes and Andreas Marnell, a former psychiatric nurse, are stabbed to death in quick succession - in the same way as Manfred Stjärne. Wilkes and Marnell were in contact with the recently discharged psychiatric patient Beatrice Sahlin. When Wallander asks the widow and son of the murdered psychologist for more information about Beatrice Sahlin, he discovers the solution to the mystery almost in passing. The case takes a turn that puts Inspector Wallander's life in extreme danger.
