23. The Phantom
A pair of lovers retreat to a cozy beach hut. Shortly afterwards, a detonation rips the wooden house apart. The police discover two charred bodies that are almost impossible to identify. The owner's driver's license is found in the glove compartment of a sports car parked nearby. Peter Adler, a wealthy businessman from Ystad, identifies the dead woman from the beach house as his wife Nina. The identity of the male corpse remains unclear at first. Only after a dental examination is it established that the dead man is Martin Rittner - Adler's neighbor and business partner. Wallander cannot hide the fact that Adler is having an affair with Rittner's attractive partner Kim Kristensen. A pile of files from the economic department also proves that Adler and Rittner were involved in illegal business dealings that could never be proven.
Wallander is convinced that Adler murdered his partner, but this suspicion is not confirmed. Instead, the homeless alcoholic Oscar, who was seen at the crime scene, becomes the focus of the investigation. When he is found murdered, the detective is left with nothing. It is as if he is chasing a ghost - only by pure chance does a new lead emerge: Jörgen, the autistic son of a neighbor of the beach house, has a special quirk: he meticulously notes down all the license plates of passing cars. A clue on the shy boy's endless list gives the case a decisive twist.
