22. The Angel of Death

Wallander and his colleague Martinsson are called to a girls' school. The 18-year-old Kurdish girl Miranda, a solo singer in an ambitious women's choir whose elegiac singing makes Wallander's heart beat faster, has mysteriously disappeared. Her parents don't seem to be too worried, as their daughter has disappeared before. Racist remarks in the guestbook of the choir's website cast suspicion on Miranda's ex-boyfriend Johan Rasmusson. The former member of a right-wing extremist youth gang has a criminal record for assault. When Miranda's best friend Lina also disappears, the investigation is intensified. An eyewitness remembers a middle-aged man hanging around the school for no apparent reason. Wallander and his colleague Isabell come across the single security guard Thomas Hammar through his car registration number.

However, the search of his house remains fruitless. Is Hammar holding the girls captive in a secret hiding place? Under interrogation, the suspect meekly admits that he is Lina's biological father. He had abandoned his wife many years ago and now wanted to finally meet his daughter. He seems to know nothing about the disappearance of the two girls. During the interrogation, Wallander receives the sad news that Miranda has been found murdered in a wooded area. The detective is crestfallen; this case seems to be giving him a hard time. On top of that, he has fallen out with his neighbor Katarina. When she inadvertently gives him an idea, the case seems to be solved after all.
