21. The Sniper
An unerring sniper is terrorizing Ystad. His victims include a suspected jewel robber. Sloppy investigations by the Malmö police lead to the gangster's release because his ex-girlfriend Sofia Ahlbäck had provided him with an alibi. Inspector Wallander asks Sofia to come to Ystad for questioning, where she appears with her protector, the shady policeman Björn Holström. The unknown sniper strikes again outside the police station. Sofia is killed and Holström narrowly escapes the attack. Against Wallander's orders, young colleague Pontus pursues the killer, but he escapes unrecognized. The detective is enraged by the hotshot's high-handedness and accuses him in harsh words of having missed his job.
Pontus' father Robert is of the same opinion and wants to bring his prodigal son back to the law firm in Stockholm. The successful lawyer threatens to sue the detective and force him to suspend Pontus from the police force. But Wallander refuses to be intimidated; instead he changes his mind about Pontus, who has obviously shown the backbone to stand up to his father. Together with his young colleague, Wallander now follows the trail of the illegal weapon that the sniper lost while on the run. It turns out that his murders are part of the initiation ritual into a mafia-like organization. When Pontus catches the policeman Holström doing dark business with their backers, he has long since found himself in the criminals' crosshairs.
