16. The Courier
Children from a school class visiting the prehistoric site of Ale Stenar with their teacher discover the body of a motorcyclist on the cliffs of Ystad. Everything points to an accident, but the autopsy reveals that the fall was faked to cover up a murder. Surveillance video from a Danish-Swedish border crossing shows the rider breaking through the customs barrier a few hours earlier. Is it a drug courier? Wallander's new colleague Pontus finds out that the dead man's motorcycle is an expensive custom-built bike made by a legendary tuning specialist. The trail leads from this mysterious man from the racing scene to a shady motorcycle club run by Wallander's old "acquaintance" Mats Runberg. Runberg appears to be clean, but his helper, the bald rocker Hans Kolt, causes a scandal during a routine check when he sets his attack dog on policeman Svartman.
Svartman is dangerously injured in the incident and his colleague Isabell is asked to testify as a witness against the thug. But for seemingly inexplicable reasons, the talented young policewoman suddenly wants to resign. Is Isabell being blackmailed? Wallander soon realizes that this tricky case requires not only his intuition, but also a sure instinct. When he finally jumps over his shadow and takes the young policewoman's problems seriously, together they find a way to put a stop to the gangsters. The next time a motorcycle courier speeds off from Copenhagen across the Öresund Bridge to Sweden, the police strike back. A night-time showdown with the drug mafia takes place in a cemetery chapel in Ystad.
