17. The Thief
A series of unsolved house break-ins worries the residents of a well-off residential area of Ystad. Dissatisfied with the police work, three family fathers take matters into their own hands and form a vigilante group. On one of their nightly patrols, they catch the Polish moonlighter Jarek Kozyra in the act of an alleged burglary. Enraged, they beat up the "Polack" and leave the seriously injured man lying in the freezing cold in a wooded area. The next day, his wife Maja reports her husband missing. The police find his burnt-out car, but there is no trace of Jarek. Forensic scientist Nyberg discovers a photo of a woman's body on the memory chip of his cell phone.
The police then order a house search and discover a large sum of cash and a lot of stolen goods in the Polish couple's home. Everything points to a double murder. The only puzzle is the connection between the two crimes. And above all: where are the bodies? While the three neighbors become entangled in contradictions during the interrogation, Kurt Wallander indulges in some exercise playing soccer with Elias, the son of his likeable neighbor and colleague Katarina Ahlsell. The detective has little success as a footballer, but the game spontaneously gives him an idea that leads to a macabre discovery.
