13. The Secret
The murder of eleven-year-old Johannes shocks Wallander and his colleagues. Linda checks the surveillance video of a supermarket where the boy was last seen. She notices a masked man pretending to be a store detective who sneakily uses the boy's shoplifting as an excuse to kidnap him. Linda identifies a certain Magnus Rhunberg, in whose house Wallander finds pedophile photos, but there is no trace of him. A check of his telephone line reveals that Rhunberg was in contact with the retired policeman Rolf Liljeberg. He leads the police to Rhunberg's weekend home, where Wallander and his colleagues discover Rhunberg's body. He has been shot dead, but the suspected murderer has cleaned up the crime scene with professional thoroughness. Lasse Bengtsson, the boy's father, certainly had a motive.
But when Wallander wants to interrogate him, Stefan Lindman, who for some unknown reason feels very strongly about the case, goes completely berserk. Wallander overhears his colleague's quiet cry for help and suspends him from duty. Linda senses that Stefan has something to do with the case, but she can't get close to him. Meanwhile, Nyberg discovers a striking parallel between Johannes' murder and a crime from 1999 for which a pedophile named Greger Frankman is still behind bars. When Linda finds out that Frankman regularly receives prison visits from Liljeberg, she decides to put the squeeze on him. She is in for a surprise: the National Criminal Police Office confirms that Liljeberg is an informer investigating a pedophile ring. When Linda finally realizes that this case has plunged her colleague Stefan into an emotional hell, it's too late...
