14. The Revenge

Kurt Wallander has realized his lifelong dream: the detective has recently taken possession of a cosy house by the sea and is celebrating his birthday with colleagues when an explosive attack on the power station paralyses the power supply to the whole of Ystad. While the town is plunged into darkness, the municipal director Eric Wester, who is under personal protection, is shot dead in his house. As the patron of a controversial exhibition of Muhammad cartoons, which caused riots in Ystad, Wester had been receiving non-stop threatening phone calls and had had his telephone number changed several times. The press speculated about a connection between the exhibition and the bloody deed. Wallander keeps a low profile in these speculations.

Two further murders of a secretary from the employment office and a nurse, both carried out according to the same pattern, do not fit the pattern. After three car bombs detonate in quick succession, a state of emergency is declared. Soldiers march in to protect the public institutions. But there are signs that the military itself could be involved in the series of murders and attacks. When the Minister of Defense arrives in Ystad to reassure the residents with a public address, she has no idea how much danger her life is in.
