02. The Village Idiot
A mentally retarded man, known as "Astro-Göran" because of his fondness for zodiac signs, enters the Ystad savings bank. He carries a bomb on his person and forces the transfer of the rather modest sum of 67,500 crowns to a foreign account. He then blows himself up in front of the people of Ystad. In this case, Inspector Wallander works officially for the first time with his daughter Linda, who has been transferred from the police to the criminal investigation department. Linda and her colleague Stefan Lindman follow the trail of the money that was transferred to Eric Leike's account.
Leike is the shrewd owner of a Danish private clinic who also works at the hospital in Ystad and cleverly uses this dual role to attract patients. As Wallander and his colleagues investigate further, the facade of the respected doctor continues to crumble: "Astro-Göran" was Leike's illegitimate son. Concerned about his prestige as a respected citizen of Ystad, Leike kept this secret for decades. He bought the silence of his mother, a gypsy, by paying alimony. Leike, who also abuses his wife Henrietta, could certainly be accused of murder. The case seems to be clearing up - until Leike is also killed by the detonation of a bomb. And as in "Astro-Göran", the police once again come across a mysterious planetary symbol.
