01. Before the Frost
Inspector Kurt Wallander has once again looked too deeply into the glass and promptly missed his daughter Linda's police school exam. So the meeting between father and daughter is not under a good star when Linda turns up in Ystad and starts work in his police station of all places. To distract himself from his failures as a father, Wallander takes his daughter on a supposedly harmless routine case: Birgitta Medberg, an elderly lady who is interested in remote hiking trails, is missing. Linda investigates on her own and finds the woman's body in a wooded area. Shortly beforehand, burnt swans were found here, doused in petrol by an apparently insane man. Wallander is fuming with rage because his daughter has negligently put her life in danger by going it alone. Linda, meanwhile, has had enough of her father and moves in with her childhood friend Anna Westin. Meanwhile, Wallander's team has been strengthened by the arrival of young, attractive colleague Stefan Lindman.
Lindman shows more than a casual interest in the commissioner's daughter, even if she is initially rather prickly towards him. The gruesome ritual murder of an abortion specialist in a church and the discovery of a Bible from the Guyanese jungle show the police that they are dealing with deluded religious fanatics who want to use the murders as a beacon of their fundamentalist madness. The discovery of her friend Anna's mysterious double life puts Linda on the trail of the perpetrator of all the terrible deeds. Anna is completely devoted to this mysterious man, she is his will-less tool, whom he wants to use unscrupulously for his worst crime: a suicide bombing in a crowded church to prevent the wedding of two homosexuals, which has been widely publicized in the media.
