29. Sveket
Successful non-fiction author Eric Wredin has left his wife Julia for a younger woman. In an ugly argument, Julia threatens her still-husband that she will ruin his career and destroy his life. Soon after, her daughter Amanda discovers her mother's body and is hospitalized with a nervous breakdown. Wallander has great sympathy for the unstable young woman, who reminds him of his own daughter Linda, who once had no contact with her father during a difficult period. Wallander is all the more surprised when Eric turns up at the hospital. After his visit, however, Amanda is quite distraught; her father didn't come for her.
Like Wallander, he wanted to find out something about a workman who had recently carried out repairs in the family villa. Wallander accuses Eric of having faked an alibi, whereupon Eric surprisingly confesses. His description of the murder is consistent with forensic details, but there are large gaps. Wallander realizes that Eric cannot be the perpetrator, but only knows the course of events from a surveillance video used to blackmail him. A surprise visit gives the detective a completely new perspective on the case.
