30. Saknaden
His lapses and forgetfulness increase, which is why Wallander secretly undergoes a neurological examination. The memory lapses could be a symptom of stress, the doctor advises him to take some time out, but the discovery of a dismembered woman's body gives Wallander no peace. It is the remains of the young prostitute Nadia from Moldova. The trail leads to the suspected human trafficker Tigran Perski, who lures young Eastern European women with the promise of a modeling career. Since nothing can be proven against the cunning crook, the detective spontaneously travels to Moldova to speak to the victim's relatives. In a lively e-mail correspondence with her sister, Nadia told of a happy life in Sweden.
Before she died, she even transferred a large sum of money back home. Back in Ystad, however, Wallander finds completely different clues: Nadia was tortured so badly by a suitor that she had to seek medical treatment. The idealistic doctor Bosse Herlitz, who treats victims of violence in the women's shelter free of charge, strangely cannot remember Nadia. Wallander puts the philanthropist Dr. Herlitz on his toes, whereupon he complains to police chief Mattson. After the forensic examination is completed, it turns out that Nadia was nine months pregnant. But there is no trace of her child. Wallander has a terrible suspicion.
