Young Wallander

Season 1 - Young Wallander

First broadcast: September 3, 2020 on Netflix - 6 episodes

Kurt Wallander has just graduated from police school and, together with his friend and colleague Reza, is on his first patrols, dealing with complaints about disturbances and other minor offenses. After work, he returns to his apartment in Rosengård, a problem neighborhood in the Swedish city of Malmö. One evening, he hears noise from the neighborhood football field and finds a young light-skinned man tied to a fence and gagged with tape. The crowd makes fun of the man. Wallander identifies himself as a policeman and is about to disperse the crowd when a man tears the tape off the gagged man. A grenade is revealed in his mouth, the detonation mechanism of which was triggered by the removal of the tape and which explodes a few seconds later in the victim's mouth.

As Wallander knows his way around the crime, he is transferred to the criminal investigation department in place of Reza, who was originally assigned to the case, and put in charge of the investigation under Inspector Hemberg. The public searches for those responsible for the attack among immigrants who are accused of hating Sweden. A public discussion about xenophobia and right-wing extremism ensues. Wallander does not believe in a hate crime, but is confronted with the racist bias of his police department and Commissioner Hemberg in particular.
